Cosmetic dentistry includes a variety of dental treatments aimed at improving the appearance of the teeth. There are various dental procedures that can be done to enhance ones appearance. These include whitening, veneers, crown and bridge work, dentures, orthodontics, or implants.
The loss of even a single tooth can have a significant impact on an individual’s confidence and well-being. It affects one’s ability to eat certain foods; it can result in further tooth loss due to movement of the remaining teeth; it can affect facial appearance (specifically the resulting “sunken-in” look associated with missing teeth); and it can have a significant impact on personal confidence and happiness.
Dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are an alternative to bridges and dentures and they are not only extremely durable, but they look, feel and function just like natural teeth. Dental implants can also be used to secure bridges and dentures.
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw where it acts as an artificial “root” to secure the replacement tooth. A few months after the dental implant is placed in the jaw and it is securely attached to the bone (“osseointegration”), a custom-made crown, bridge or denture is attached to the dental implant.
Dental implants require numerous appointments over the span of several months. At the first “record-taking” appointment, Dr. Salyani and his team will take a medical history from you as well as x-rays, photographs and impressions of your jaw and teeth. In some cases, a cone beam CT scan may also be prescribed. This information will be used to determine the placement of the dental implant and to create a custom-made implant restoration just for your smile.
At a subsequent appointment, the dental implant will be surgically secured into the jaw, following which the gum tissue will be sutured back around the dental implant and left to heal for a number of months until the dental implant is secure (or “integrated”) in the jaw. In some circumstances, a temporary crown may be placed over the dental implant during the healing period.
Once the dental implant is integrated, Dr. Salyani will design a custom-made restoration (such as a crown or a bridge) to fit over the dental implant, which will match the colour, size and shape of your natural teeth.
If you are missing one or more teeth, call to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Salyani to determine if a dental implant is the functional and aesthetic smile solution for you.
Crowns and Bridges
Crowns are dental restorations that are placed over a natural tooth which has lost structure or strength for reasons such as damage, decay, fracture and root canal treatment. Crowns are also used to restore dental implants, improve bite dysfunctions and support teeth as part of a bridge. The crown acts as a “cap” giving the natural tooth strength, protection, durability and improving the look of the tooth aesthetically. Crowns are custom-made for your mouth and are designed to match the color, size and shape of your natural teeth.
Call to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Salyani to determine if crowns and/or bridges are the smile solution that you desire.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a non-removable dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth or teeth and may be an alternative to partial dentures. The bridge is secured in place by bonding it to the adjacent natural teeth or implants using crowns. Like crowns, bridges are custom-made for your mouth and are designed to match the color, size and shape of your natural teeth. All of the crowns and bridges used at Collingwood Laser Dentistry are metal-free and can be made with all-ceramic materials.
What is involved?
Both crowns and bridges require at least two appointments. At the first appointment, you will meet with Dr. Salyani who will prepare your tooth (or teeth), select the shade and take dental impressions which will be used to design the crown and/or bridge. A temporary crown and/or bridge will be placed in your mouth which will simulate your new smile so you have a chance to see what it will look like before the lab creates the permanent one for you. As an additional benefit, you will leave the office looking even better than when you arrived! At the next appointment, the temporary crown and/or bridge will be removed and the permanent one will be affixed to your teeth for a beautiful, natural looking smile.
